DIY Photobooth vs Hiring a Photobooth in Singapore: Is DIY Really Cheaper?

Professional photobooth setup for a wedding in Singapore

A DIY photobooth sounds simple.

Set up a camera or iPad, add a backdrop, buy some props and let your wedding or birthday guests take their own photos.

And if you already own most of the equipment, that can absolutely work.

But if you are planning to rent the camera, lighting, backdrop and instant printer specifically for one event, the numbers become surprisingly close to hiring a complete photobooth service.

In some cases, renting the individual equipment can actually cost as much as — or more than — a professionally operated photobooth.

Three Ways to Set Up a Photobooth in Singapore

So which option makes sense?

There are really three different ways to do it:

  1. A simple DIY phone or iPad photo corner
  2. A DIY photobooth with professional camera, lighting and instant printing
  3. Hiring a photobooth company to set up and operate everything

Let’s compare them properly.

Quick answer: If you already own the equipment or only want a simple digital photo corner, DIY can be much cheaper. If you want professional lighting and unlimited instant prints and need to rent most of the equipment, the DIY cost can come surprisingly close to hiring a complete photobooth.

Prices in this article were checked in October 2026 and are intended as examples. Rental prices and availability can change.

Option 1: The Simple DIY Phone or iPad Photobooth

This is the genuinely inexpensive DIY option.

You could use:

  • Your own phone or iPad
  • A tripod
  • A ring light
  • A wall, curtain or simple backdrop
  • A few props
  • A photo booth or camera app

If you already own most of these items, your additional cost could be very low.

For a casual home birthday, small solemnisation or intimate party, this may be completely sufficient.

Guests can take their own photos and AirDrop, WhatsApp or download them afterwards.

The trade-off

A simple DIY photo corner isn’t quite the same experience as an instant-print photobooth.

You may not have professional camera quality, controlled studio lighting, instant physical prints, custom-designed photo strips, unlimited copies for groups, someone managing the queue, someone troubleshooting technical problems, or an operator encouraging guests and keeping things moving.

That doesn’t make it bad.

It simply means you’re comparing two different experiences.

If your objective is just to create a fun photo corner, DIY wins on price.

If you want guests leaving with customised physical prints in their hands, the comparison changes.

Option 2: Building a Proper DIY Instant-Print Photobooth

Suppose you want something closer to what a professional photobooth company provides.

You now need more than an iPad and ring light.

A realistic setup might require:

  • Mirrorless or DSLR camera
  • Suitable lens
  • Studio light or flash
  • Light modifier / softbox
  • Light stand
  • Laptop or iPad
  • Photobooth software
  • Professional dye-sublimation photo printer
  • Printer media
  • Backdrop and backdrop stand
  • Props
  • Cables and extension leads
  • Table
  • Transport
  • Someone to set everything up and operate it

Let’s price some of that using actual Singapore equipment rental rates.

Example DIY Photobooth Equipment Cost in Singapore

One Singapore event-equipment rental company currently lists these rates:

Professional photobooth camera, lighting and instant photo printer setup in Singapore
Professional photobooth camera, lighting and instant photo printer setup in Singapore

The DIY Figure Still Doesn’t Include Everything

And there is something important about that S$396–S$436 figure:

It still does not include everything.

You may still need a laptop or iPad, photobooth software, a camera trigger or booth interface, backdrop fabric or a customised backdrop, props, custom photo-strip artwork, extension cables, extra printer media, your own transport if self-collecting, time to collect and return rented equipment, and someone to operate the booth.

So the DIY calculation can reach the price of a professional photobooth surprisingly quickly.

What Does Hiring a Photobooth Cost Instead?

For comparison, AIBOOTHSG’s classic photobooth package starts at S$388 for two hours.

That includes:

  • Canon EOS R100 mirrorless camera
  • Godox professional studio lighting
  • Professional dye-sublimation photo printer
  • Unlimited photo sessions during the booking
  • Unlimited instant prints
  • Choice of 2×6 photo strips or 4R prints
  • Custom print design
  • Props
  • Backdrop
  • QR digital sharing
  • On-site operator
  • Delivery
  • Setup
  • Teardown

The current advertised price is S$388 for two hours, with delivery, setup and teardown included islandwide. (AI Booth SG)

You can see the full setup on our professional photobooth rental page.

That means, using the example equipment rental prices above:

DIY professional setup, self-collect: ~S$396+

versus

AIBOOTHSG professional photobooth: S$388

And the DIY figure still excludes several items and your own labour.

That doesn’t mean hiring will always be cheaper.

It does mean you should compare the whole setup, rather than comparing a photobooth package price against the cost of only renting a camera.

The Cost People Often Forget: Your Time

This is particularly relevant for weddings.

For our own events, getting a booth ready isn’t simply arriving ten minutes before guests.

We normally allow around two hours before the event for transport, unloading, setup, printer preparation, camera and lighting adjustment, software testing and final checks.

After the booking, approximately another hour can go into packing everything down and loading out.

That’s before counting travelling to and from the venue.

If you’re doing everything yourself, someone has to handle that.

At a birthday party, maybe that’s manageable.

On your wedding day, ask yourself who that person will be.

Will the bride or groom be testing the printer?

Will a sibling be adjusting the camera?

Will a friend leave cocktail reception because the software stopped responding?

Saving S$50 or S$100 looks very different if it means giving someone three or four hours of additional work on an already busy day.

And Someone Still Has to Run It During the Event

Professional photobooths aren’t completely passive machines.

During a real event, things happen.

We’ve dealt with:

  • Printer jams
  • Paper or media issues
  • Unstable Wi-Fi
  • Software bugs
  • Camera settings
  • Lighting adjustments
  • Guests who aren’t sure how to use the booth
  • Groups taking too long
  • Queue management during busy periods

None of these problems is unusual.

The difference is simply who deals with them.

When you hire a manned booth, the organiser normally doesn’t even notice.

The operator handles it.

For a DIY booth, you are the technical support team.

What About Using a Polaroid Instead?

This is another popular DIY option, especially at weddings.

Put a Polaroid camera beside a guest book and let guests take their own photographs.

It’s simple, charming and doesn’t require a printer.

But the film cost adds up quickly.

As one current Singapore retail example, Challenger lists Polaroid Color i-Type film at S$28.90 for eight photos, while a 16-photo double pack is S$54.90. (Challenger Singapore)

Using the double-pack price:

S$54.90 ÷ 16 ≈ S$3.43 per photograph.

At 100 photographs:

approximately S$343 just for film.

That’s before buying or borrowing the camera.

And 100 photographs can disappear surprisingly quickly at a wedding with 150–250 guests.

We’ve actually seen customers consider the Polaroid route first, then realise that once enough film is purchased for the whole event, the consumables alone are approaching the cost of hiring our photobooth.

A Polaroid guest book is lovely when you specifically want that aesthetic.

It just isn’t automatically the cheap option.

When DIY Photobooths Make Sense

We’re a photobooth company, but we don’t think everyone needs to hire one.

A DIY booth can make perfect sense if:

  • You already own the equipment — if you already own a good camera, lighting, printer and laptop, your incremental cost is much lower. That’s a completely different equation from renting everything for one night.
  • You don’t need instant prints — using your own iPad and letting guests take digital photos can be inexpensive and fun.
  • It’s a small birthday or home event — for 20 or 30 guests, you may not need a full professional booth.
  • You enjoy building things yourself — some couples genuinely enjoy creating their own wedding stations. If setting up the booth is part of the fun for you, DIY has value beyond just saving money.

When Hiring a Photobooth Makes More Sense

Hiring becomes more attractive when:

  • You need to rent most of the equipment — once a camera, lens, lighting, backdrop, printer and media are all rented separately, the cost difference can become very small.
  • You want unlimited instant prints — at a wedding, one group photograph often needs several copies because everyone in the picture wants one. That is very different from providing one print per session.
  • You have a larger guest list — a two-hour booth can handle roughly up to around 100 sessions in suitable conditions, although actual throughput depends on group size, guest behaviour and queue flow. Having an operator becomes increasingly valuable as the queue gets longer. For a deeper look, read our guide on how many hours to rent a photobooth.
  • It’s your wedding — the question isn’t only “Can I set this up myself?” It’s also “Do I want to be responsible for this on my wedding day?”
  • You want it to look consistent — camera exposure, flash positioning and printer colour all affect how the final photograph looks. Professional equipment alone doesn’t guarantee professional-looking photos — it still has to be configured properly.

DIY Wedding Photobooth vs DIY Birthday Photobooth

The answer can be different depending on the event.

For birthdays

A DIY iPad setup can work very well.

If the party is relatively small and everyone already knows each other, guests are usually happy to take their own photos.

Put it beside a nice backdrop with some props and you’re done.

If instant prints aren’t important, this is probably the strongest case for DIY.

For weddings

We’re more cautious.

Wedding schedules are already complicated.

Your bridal party and family have other responsibilities, and there may be 100, 200 or more guests arriving within a relatively short window.

The booth needs to work when guests want it.

Not after someone finds the right printer setting.

For larger weddings, paying for someone else to take care of setup, printing, queues and teardown can be worth as much as the equipment itself.

So, Is DIY Actually Cheaper?

Sometimes.

But there are two very different versions of DIY.

Simple DIY is definitely cheaper.

Use equipment you already own, skip professional instant printing, keep the setup simple and you can create a perfectly enjoyable photo corner for very little money.

Professional-style DIY may not be cheaper.

Once you start renting a proper camera, lighting, dye-sublimation printer, print media and backdrop, current Singapore rental prices can put the equipment alone around S$400 or more.

Then add transport, software, artwork, props, setup time and someone to operate it.

At that point, compare the final total against a complete photobooth package — not just the headline equipment prices.

For our own classic photobooth, the current promotional price is S$388 for two hours, including professional camera and studio lighting, unlimited prints, custom artwork, backdrop, props, QR sharing, delivery, setup, teardown and an on-site operator. (AI Booth SG)

For some events, DIY will still win.

For others, the surprising answer may be that doing everything yourself saves very little — and gives you a lot more work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to DIY a photobooth in Singapore?

If you already own a phone or iPad and don’t require physical prints, a DIY booth can be very inexpensive. If you’re renting professional camera equipment, lighting, a backdrop and an instant photo printer, an illustrative equipment basket using current Singapore rental prices can reach approximately S$400 or more before software, props and manpower.

Can I rent just a photobooth printer in Singapore?

Yes. Professional dye-sublimation event printers can be rented separately. One current Singapore equipment rental listing prices a DNP DP-QW410 printer at S$120/day, with a 4×6 media set at S$80. Make sure you test the printer, drivers and photobooth software together before your event.

Is an iPad good enough for a DIY photobooth?

For casual events, yes. An iPad booth is compact, easy to operate and suitable for digital sharing. The biggest differences compared with a professional camera booth are usually lighting, image quality and the printing workflow.

Is a Polaroid cheaper than hiring a wedding photobooth?

Not necessarily. Current Polaroid i-Type film pricing can work out to around S$3.40–S$3.60 per photograph. At 100 photos, film alone can exceed S$340. Polaroid is best chosen because you love the format, rather than automatically assuming it will be cheaper.

Do I need Wi-Fi for a DIY photobooth?

Not necessarily for basic photography or local printing, but Wi-Fi may be needed for QR sharing, cloud galleries or certain software functions. A good photobooth workflow should also have a plan for unreliable venue Wi-Fi.

How long should I hire a photobooth for a wedding or birthday?

Two hours is often sufficient for smaller events, while larger weddings may benefit from three hours or more depending on guest count and programme timing.

Should I DIY my wedding photobooth?

If you enjoy DIY projects, already own much of the equipment and have a trusted person willing to operate it, it can work well. If you’re renting most of the equipment and want unlimited instant printing, professional lighting and someone to manage the booth, compare the complete DIY cost with a professional rental first. You may find the price difference is much smaller than expected.

Planning a Wedding or Birthday in Singapore?

If you’re still deciding between DIY and hiring a booth, start by working out what you actually need:

  • Digital photos only?
  • Instant prints?
  • 100+ guests?
  • Custom photo strips?
  • Someone to run it?

Once you compare the same experience on both sides, the decision becomes much easier.

AIBOOTHSG’s classic photobooth currently starts from S$388 for two hours, including instant prints, custom artwork, professional camera and Godox studio lighting, backdrop, props, QR sharing, delivery, setup, teardown and an on-site operator.

Current promotional pricing and date reservation are subject to availability and applicable booking terms.
